Latino Student Named Scholar for the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities

Senior mathematics major Jamie Munoz has been named a Student Track Scholar for the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) providing him the opportunity to attend and represent Georgia Southern University at the organization’s 27th Annual Conference held in Chicago, Ill.

Awarded based on criteria set by HACU's corporate and federal conference sponsors, Student Track Scholars must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program.

“I couldn’t believe I received the award. Words can’t describe how I felt.  I called my sister, my parents and my close friends soon after,” Munoz said. “I also contacted Ms. Alba Cobos who first told me about this scholarship and helped me out with the letter of recommendation for the award.  It took a while for it to sink in, but I was very happy to be selected and am proud to represent Eagle Nation,” he said. Originally from Compton, Calif., Munoz relocated to Milledgeville, Ga. eight years ago with his family. A student since fall 2010, he serves as a bilingual recruiter for Georgia Southern, attending college fairs and providing University information to potential Latino students.

“I have been very involved, and helped bring the Association of Latin American Students on campus, which I like to say is one of my greatest accomplishments during my academic career, along with  maintaining a high GPA.  I am proud to be a latino student leader and I hope to have inspired others like me to follow their dreams and to also be leaders on campus,” he said.

Munoz serves as president of the Association of Latin American Students. He is also a member of the Alpha Sigma Chapter of Phi Iota Alpha Fraternity Incorporated, the Mathematical Association of America and a Southern Ambassador.
