College of Engineering and Information Technology Students Stand Out Among Workforce

Eighty students in the College of Engineering and Information Technology’s Mechanical Engineering SolidWorks 3D Modeling course recently passed the Certified SolidWorks Associate (CSWA) exam.

A mechanism to quantify the students’ ability to perform tasks associated with 3D modeling, the three-hour exam allows the user to design, test and produce drawings for any object through SolidWorks, an advanced drafting, analysis and editing program. The CSWA exam is a distinguishing certificate recognized industry-wide, which registers  participants in an international database as design associates, making their credentials verifiable to the public. To become certified, students must have a passing score of 165 or better.

“Stating that you took the course is one thing, having proof that you know the material is another,” said Spencer Harp, laboratory supervisor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. “It says a lot about the students we have in the engineering program. This exam was offered as extracurricular with no course credit. The students saw the benefit and took the initiative to attend the review session and spend the three hours grinding away at the exam.”

Currently offered once a semester at Georgia Southern University by the faculty instructing the SolidWorks 3D Modeling course, the CSWA exam is also open to students who have previously taken the course.

“Greater than 80 percent of students passed the exam, and a portion of those students were taught by other faculty,” said Harp. “I think this is a compliment to the faculty who taught them, and the uniformity in the instruction. It is gratifying as an instructor and extremely beneficial to the students entering the workforce.”

The CSWA exam is part of a series of certifications offered by Dessault Systems, and is the platform for advanced certifications.
