Events Scheduled to Highlight Sexual Assault Awareness Week

The Georgia Southern University Sexual Assault Response Team is sponsoring the 14th annual Sexual Assault Awareness Week March 3-6 on campus to help increase awareness of sexual violence and show commitment for creating a safer campus community.

All too often, communities only hear about the sensationalized cases involving sexual assault. Events like those planned during Sexual Assault Awareness Week are important because in addition to educating the community about the true incidents of sexual assault, they empower survivors to have their voices heard and to access the resources that they need,” said Deborah Perez-Lopez, co-chair of the Sexual Assault Response Team at Georgia Southern.

The week of events will begin Monday, March 3, with The Clothesline Project and end on Thursday, March 6, with the Take Back The Night rally and march.

The Clothesline Project is a visual display that honors survivors and memorializes victims of sexual assault, domestic violence and stalking. The display will feature a clothesline full of t-shirts in a range of colors representing the type of violence experienced. The shirts are designed by a survivor or someone who cares about the survivor or victim.

The clothesline will be displayed at the Russell Union Rotunda and in the lobby of the Recreation Activity Center (RAC) Monday through Thursday. Anyone who wishes to share her or his story by creating a t-shirt design is welcome to stop by the Rotunda from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. or by the RAC lobby from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.

On March 6, the Take Back The Night March will begin at 7 p.m. in front of the University Store and go through campus, culminating in a rally with a candlelight vigil at the Russell Union Rotunda. The march and rally are held to raise awareness of and speak out against sexual violence.
