Free Film Screening to Shed Light on Addiction and Recovery

The Center for Addiction Recovery at Georgia Southern University, a part of the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health, will offer a free screening of “The Anonymous People,” a film providing education on substance use and abuse. It will be shown on Thursday, April 24 at 7 p.m. in the Nessmith-Lane Conference Center, Room 1915, located at 847 Plant Drive. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and light refreshments will be provided. “The Anonymous People” is a feature documentary film about the 23 million Americans living in long-term recovery from alcohol and other drug addiction. The moving story of “The Anonymous People” is told through the faces and voices of citizens, leaders, volunteers, corporate executives, public figures and celebrities who are laying it all on the line to save the lives of others just like them. This passionate new public recovery movement aims to transform public opinion, engage communities and elected officials, and finally shift problematic policy toward lasting solutions. “I would encourage anyone to come who has a connection to recovery or addiction,” said Jamie Cromley, collegiate recovery community assistant coordinator at the Center for Addiction Recovery. “It’s a movie for everyone. We have in our minds that addiction and recovery is only relevant to the homeless man on the street, but it could be a stay-at-home-mom or the student you’re sitting next to in class. The film really de-stigmatizes addiction and brings to light the truth about recovery.” The Center for Addiction Recovery is a non-profit entity dedicated to the study of addiction and the process of long-term recovery through research, educational programs and community based outreach and services. Seating is available on a first come, first served basis. For more information, contact Jamie Cromley at 912-478-2288 or by emailing jsamuels@georgiasouthern.edu.
