Centers for Teaching and Technology Name SoTL Fellows and Award Recipient

Georgia Southern University faculty members Moya Alfonso, John Dobson and Nancy Arrington have been named Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Fellows by the Centers for Teaching and Technology (CT2). In addition, CT2 has named Adrienne Cohen as the recipient of the 2014-’15 SoTL Award. Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Fellows The SoTL Fellows program is designed to foster faculty leadership by promoting evidence-based teaching. Each fellow is awarded $3,000 to support their research projects. Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health A faculty member since 2010, Moya Alfonso, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of community health behavior and education. Her research is focused on improving assessment in Georgia Southern’s community health courses. She is a native of Tampa, Florida.
  College of Health and Human Sciences John Dobson, Ph.D., assistant professor of exercise science in the School of Kinesiology has been a faculty member for three years. His research is focused on physiological learning strategies to better help students retain course information. He is from Virginia Beach, Virginia.
  College of Education A native of Anderson, South Carolina, Nancy Arrington, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning. Her research proposal is titled “Examining Preservice Teachers’ Self-Efficacy for Enhancing Literacy of Diverse Learners through Music: A SoTL Project Connecting a Creative Arts Course with a Practicum Experience Course.” She has been a faculty member for four years.

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Award Additionally, the SoTL Award, also bestowed by CT2, encourages and recognizes faculty members who engage in scholarship that focuses on teaching and learning and highlights the work of the recipient, especially completed during the past three years. College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences The award recipient, Adrienne Cohen, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of sociology in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. Cohen received the award for her three SoTL research projects from which she has produced three publishable works. She collaborated on her research with students and colleagues. In addition, Cohen was a 2012-’13 SoTL Scholar. A native of Hull, Massachusetts, she’s been a faculty member for three years. Cohen received $2,000 acknowledging her efforts.
