Center for Sustainability Introduces Environmental Community Cinema Series

The Center for Sustainability kicks off its fall 2014 Environmental Community Cinema Series with “Eating Alabama,” a documentary focused on the loss of the connection between food and its production to feed a global population. The film will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the Biology Building, Room 1119. Open at no cost to faculty, staff, students and the public, parking is available in the parking area adjacent to the Hollis building. “In Statesboro, we are privileged to have some wonderful local, sustainable food options - twice weekly in the community with the Main Street Statesboro Farmers Market and on our campus with or bi-weekly campus farmers markets,” said Lissa Leege, director of the Center for Sustainability. “This film can help us to appreciate the value of these local food resources: both for our health and for our earth.” “Eating Alabama” details the experiences of documentary filmmaker Andrew Beck Grace and his wife, Rashmi, on their commitment to returning to their childhood locales in Alabama and eating only local and seasonal foods. The couples’ initial envisions of an idyllic pastoral life of their ancestors becomes more complex throughout their journey. “Students, faculty, staff, and community members interested in health and wellness, sustainability, agriculture, the local economy, film, history, and more will enjoy this documentary about why food matters,” said Leege. This series is made possible by student activity fees. For more information, contact the Center for Sustainability at 912-478-5895.
