On Friday, Dec. 12, more than 1,700 students will become alumni during the 23
rd annual Fall Commencement ceremonies, and every individual will have one thing in common: the need for a job.
Georgia Southern University’s
Office of Career Services provides a variety of helpful services for job-seeking students as well as alumni including career assessments and advising, resume critiquing, job search assistance, mock interviews, career fairs and events, on-campus interviews, graduate school information and access to
Eagle Career Net, an online job searching tool.
Here at
My News, we caught up with Career Development Specialist Amy Rowell to learn more about these services and the recommended steps Eagles should take to prepare themselves for the competitive workforce.
“Career Services provides amazing resources to assist graduating students with their job search process,” says Rowell. “We believe that once an eagle, always an eagle, and students may continue to utilize our services for free after graduation.”
Below, Rowell discusses recommended action steps.
Take Action
Step 1 –
Schedule an appointment with a Career Development Specialist
Begin by scheduling a time to meet with a Career Development Specialist to receive individualized guidance during your job search. First, consider what type of position you are seeking and the location. If you are unsure of career options available, you may want to consider taking the FOCUS career assessment to gain a better understanding of careers that may be of interest.
Step 2 – Build Your Resume
A résumé is required to apply for any position, and the résumé critique service is the most used service within our office. If a student does not have a résumé, a Career Services staff member can assist in developing a résumé and then critiquing it.
Step 3 – Begin Your Job Search
Eagle Career Net is one of the best resources available to assist students with their job search. This is an online program that allows students to:
1) Create and/or upload résumés into the system. Once the résumé is in our system, we can then refer the résumé to employers who contact us.
2) View job postings
3) Sign up for on campus interviews or RSVP for company information sessions
4) View companies registered to attend a career fair
5) Schedule a time to meet with a Career Development Specialist
Students are encouraged to search for positions through Eagle Career Net; however, if they do not find positions of interest, they may also utilize CareerShift, an additional online job search program.
Step 4 – Complete a Mock Interview
We also recommend that students conduct a mock interview in preparation for the real interview. Students may schedule an in-person mock interview with their Career Development Specialist or conduct an online mock interview through our InterviewStream program.
Step 5 – Network
Networking is a critical step for the job search, as 75-80% of jobs are found through who you know. Career Services offers a variety of career fairs each semester that allows students to network with companies. In addition, staff within our office can guide students in utilizing social networking sites such as LinkedIn.
Step 6 – Consider the Offer
As students make decisions regarding which position they should accept, they should consider several things. First, students should apply for positions that are of interest to them and/or will help them in achieving their career goals. They should also be open in regards to companies and various positions, since most companies hire for a wide range of positions from accounting to public relations. In addition, students should be flexible especially in regards to relocating. The job search process can seem overwhelming, but students have a strong support team in Career Services to make the process easier.
