Tyler Brown and Brook Tesema’s viral video competition Advinup took first place at the second annual 3 Day Startup (3DS) competition held Feb. 20-22.
3DS is a weekend intensive business startup workshop presented by Georgia Southern University’s Business Innovation Group (BIG). The workshop allows students interested in entrepreneurship to participate in a living laboratory, giving them the tools they need to start successful companies. The workshop includes business idea generation and customer engagement sessions, followed by the students pitching their finished ideas to a panel of judges.
“3DS was a great success again this year,” said Suzanne Hallman, Georgia Southern Business Advisor and co-organizer of the event. “We had some of Georgia Southern’s finest students who gave up their entire weekend to work on startups whether it was their idea or not.”
Advinup is a social media app that allows users to receive rewards for their creativity. Users would upload a video in different categories, where they can compete for prizes, and fans and other users can comment on posted videos.
As the winners, Advinup's creators will move on to the Fast Pitch competition on March 5 in Savannah, where they will pitch their idea to investors and business people from the area. Advinup team members are co-founders Tyler Brown and Brook Tesema, John Nwosu, Phillip Johnson, Chris Jones, Stephen Johnson and Nnamdi Obodoechine.
Advinup was one of six teams that pitched this year. The others include:
- The Move - an anonymous location-based even app.
- Book Biz - a college student book swap app.
- Spark - a non-profit event planning and promotions business.
- Design a Date - an app to help make date night planning frustration-free.
- Wherebuy - a location-based retail inventory app.
