Georgia Southern Takes on Mardi Gras

MGM The two largest student organizations at Georgia Southern are teaming up for the fifth annual “Mardi Gras Madness” event on March 10 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The entire street of Georgia Avenue will be shut down in order to accommodate the expected 800 guests in attendance. The aim of “Mardi Gras Madness” is to educate students and the community on the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption and to promote safe alcohol practices, especially during spring break. The Residence Hall Association (RHA) and Student Government Association (SGA) set precedent with this event last year when over 500 people attended the educational event (despite temperatures below 20 degrees). More than 20 student and departmental organizations will host booths and activities at the event. Guests can expect authentic New Orleans food and music as well as live performances. University President Brooks Keel, Ph.D., will help lead off the festivities with the cutting of the King Cake. Guests include speakers from the Office of Alcohol and Other Drugs and the University Police Department as well as Dean of Students Patrice Jackson. The New Orleans atmosphere will feature jesters, magicians, a jazz band and other live music, and the giveaway of hundreds of beaded necklaces and other items. The event will blend two organizational pillars (advocate and program) to educate the public on the subject of alcohol abuse with fun, interactive Mardi Gras games like the drunk vision goggle maze walk (a virtual experience of alcohol impairment). “With it being my second term serving as president of the Residence Hall Association, it is such an honor to witness first-hand how the organization has grown,” said Briana Daugherty, senior public relations major. “I am so proud of RHA and so glad that we are able to spark a tradition with ‘Mardi Gras Madness’ on Georgia Southern's campus that encourages collaboration, education, and fun.” This event is free and open to the public. Students are encouraged to bring their Eagle ID. Donation opportunities for Relay for Life and the Eagles for Eagles initiative will be available during the event. About The Residence Hall Association The Residence Hall Association (RHA) is the second largest student organization at Georgia Southern University.
