Georgia Southern Celebrates 25 Years of Americans with Disabilities Act

ADA25Anniversary1200x900

Next week, the Student Disability Resource Center (SDRC) at Georgia Southern will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a law passed in 1990 to prevent discrimination against people with various disabilities. To celebrate the event, the SDRC will host activities during the week to raise ADA awareness among the campus community. On Tuesday, April 14, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m., the group will present an ADA Pledge event in the Commons Area of Russell Union. There, students will have the opportunity to sign a card that pledges their support of the ADA, demonstrating Georgia Southern’s commitment to equality for all people on campus. On Thursday, April 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the College of Education auditorium, the SDRC will present keynote speaker Pamela Williamson, a Georgia Southern alumna and director of the Southeast ADA Center. Williamson will discuss the passage of the ADA and how it continues to affect the lives of millions today. On Monday, April 20, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Russell Union Ballroom, the SDRC will present “Lives Worth Living,” a documentary about the ADA. The film focuses on the disability rights movement as a social empowerment movement, where people with disabilities fight against discrimination and demand equal access and opportunity for employment, housing, transportation, telecommunications and state and local government services. For more information about these events, contact the SDRC at 912-478-1566 or by email at sdrc@georgiasouthern.edu.
