Georgia Southern Track and Field Club Takes Home Third in Nationals
Athletes Earn National Champion Awards
On Thursday April 9, the Georgia Southern Track and Field Club, part of club sports through Campus Recreation & Intramurals (CRI), set out for Bloomington, Indiana, to compete in the National Intercollegiate Running Club Association (NIRCA) Championships at Indiana University’s Robert C. Haugh Complex . The team fell just short of the first place national title but did earn the title of Southeastern Conference champions among many other titles. “Traveling with a small team of only 19 individuals competing didn't hold much promise for us to turn some heads,” said La’Kai Whatley, team captain. “Despite the numbers not being in our favor, our women finished in the top eight and our men fought hard for a third place spot out of about 50 teams, and brought back a shiny new trophy to match the many medals both teams earned.” Several Georgia Southern athletes were named national champions including Andrew Johnson (sophomore) and Sagirah Butler (freshman) for the 100-meter-dash. Whatley (junior) and Brandon Cole (junior) took home titles for national champions and two-time All-American winners for their efforts in the 200 and 400-meter-hurdles. Whatley, Johnson, Devin Duinkerk (freshman) and Butler all took silver medals in their respective events. Wesley Shaw (freshman) and Shabrea Duffy (freshman) earned bronze medals. Several members of the teams ran their personal bests at this event. The club team took home gold in both Men’s and Women’s 4x100 meter relay as well as gold in the Men’s 4x400 meter relay.
