Great Minds Lecture Series continues with Juanjuan Peng, Ph.D., on March 22

Juanjuan Peng, Ph.D., continues Georgia Southern’s Great Minds Lecture Series with a presentation on “Selling a Healthy Lifestyle in Late Qing China: Commercial Advertisements for Hygienic Products in the Dagong Bao 1902-1911,” Tuesday, March 22, at 5:30 p.m. in the Fielding S. Russell Union, room 2048. Peng’s lecture will explore newspaper advertisements in early twentieth century China and introduce the modern Chinese concept of “weisheng,” typically meaning hygiene. She will showcase the differences between weisheng and western hygiene and explain what these products were, who was using them and what role gender played in their consumption. Peng earned her Ph.D. and M.A. from Johns Hopkins University and received a B.S. and M.S. from Wuhan University in China. She has served as an assistant professor in the Department of History since 2007. Her teaching and research interest includes social and economic history, history of modern China and business history. The Great Minds Lecture Series will conclude on April 27 with a lecture by Jacek Lubecki, Ph.D., from the department of political science and international studies.
