Southern Gentlemen, the a cappella barbershop ensemble at Georgia Southern University, were named champions at the inaugural Carolinas District Collegiate Challenge in Asheville, North Carolina, on Nov. 12.
The Collegiate Challenge panel selected four ensembles out of video entries from across the region to perform. Barbershop Harmony Society judges selected Southern Gentlemen as the champions with a superior rating. The ensemble took home a $500 prize and a commemorative plaque.
The ensemble of 18 men sang three arrangements, “How Deep is Your Love,” “Bye Bye Blues” and “Till I Hear You Sing,” en route to winning the competition. Associate professor Shannon Jeffreys, D.M.A., supervised the group.
“I am overwhelmed by the accomplishments of these students,” said Jeffreys. “This year’s Gentlemen are so special. Many of these guys are freshmen and are led by such positive upperclassmen role models.”
Southern Gentlemen was founded in 2014 under Jeffreys and is now conducted by student director Colin Harrison and assistant director Josh Cook.
"We not only ranked first in the competition, but we also got to meet and sing with the other ensembles,” said Harrison. “It was a great weekend of music-making that we will not soon forget.”
