Students and staff members from Georgia Southern University’s Intramural Sports programs and Campus Recreation and Intramurals (CRI) received national recognition in early January during the 2018 NIRSA National Flag Football Championships held in Pensacola, Florida.

Montrell Cade, a graduate assistant for the Intramural Sports program, was named an All-American Official for the NIRSA flag football tournament. Cade officiated the open league semi-final game and was the line judge for the flag football men’s championship game. His performance and consistency in those games helped him garner the honor. “It felt great being able to rep resent CRI on a national stage,” said Cade. “It gives me a sense of pride knowing that I was able to receive this honor as a member of CRI.” Zach Weyher and Brian Veverka, Cade’s supervisors and Intramural Sports directors, commended his performance. “We were happy to see Montrell become an All-American Official, helping add to our program's stellar reputation across the country,” said Veverka. In addition to Cade’s recognition, Georgia Southern’s co-ed intramural flag football team, #TeamFain, made its debut at the flag football championship. After defeating Valdosta State in the semi-finals, the team fell just short in the championship game and earned second place in the tournament. Two players from the team were named MVPs. Fain was posthumously inducted into the NIRSA Hall of Fame during the conference for her outstanding volunteer work, which impacted hundreds of lives through CRI and NIRSA. “We are all very proud of Sarah and her legacy,” said Gene Sherry, executive director for CRI. “She is the first person from CRI to be inducted into the NIRSA Hall of Fame, and she truly deserves it.” For more information about CRI and Intramural Sports, visit GeorgiaSouthern.edu/cri.
