Georgia Southern alumna receives Love of Learning Award from Phi Kappa Phi

Georgia Southern University alumna Whitney Thornton (‘17) was recently named a 2017 Love of Learning Award winner from the Phi Kappa Phi honor society. Thornton, originally from Albany, Georgia, was one of 200 Phi Kappa Phi members to earn this title and a $500 award to help fund post-baccalaureate professional development and academic studies. “I am glad the Love of Learning award exists because it can be extremely difficult to find scholarships after you graduate from undergraduate school,” said Thornton. “I believe that Phi Kappa Phi is truly committed to not only serving their members, but also encouraging their members to rise to their full potential in their chosen field of study.” She plans to use the award to help further her education and prepare for health professional school. Thornton recently graduated summa cum laude from Georgia Southern with a bachelor’s degree in public health. During her time at the University, she was a member of Eta Sigma Gamma Public Health Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi, Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society and Delta Sigma Theta sorority. Thornton currently works for the Georgia Department of Public Health as an emergency preparedness assistant for the Southwest District 8-2. Phi Kappa Phi was founded in 1987 at the University of Maine and has grown to become a global network of the best and brightest, initiating more than 30,000 members from 300 campuses each year. Today, Phi Kappa Phi recognizes and promotes academic excellence in all fields of higher education and engages the community of scholars in service to others. Georgia Southern University, a public Carnegie Doctoral/Research institution founded in 1906, offers 142 degree programs serving more than 27,000 students through nine colleges on three campuses in Savannah, Statesboro, Hinesville and online instruction.
