Georgia Southern first-year students win at statewide competition

A team of first-year students from Georgia Southern University recently took home first place during the 2018 Community Impact Challenge, a statewide competition for undergraduate students to positively impact social issues while increasing leadership skills. Students Lakiah Clark, Jasmine Mears, Briana Taylor and Grace Asbury won first place for their idea to create a conference for female Georgia Southern students and community members to develop negotiating and networking skills in order to address the gender pay gap. The first place team was provided $600 to help fund the concept they proposed. The Community Impact Challenge, hosted in Atlanta, was developed through a collaborative effort by John Banter and John Egan from Georgia Southern University along with Tom Yannuzzi, Ph.D., Judy Craven and Ryan Keesee from Kennesaw State University. During the competition student groups presented concepts they designed to address at least one of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Georgia Southern had five teams with a total of 24 students presenting at the Community Impact Challenge, and two teams made it to the competition’s final round. Students’ presentations and concepts were judged by Sustainable Development Goal committed members from the United Nations Association of Atlanta and other  local community partners. The students were members of The Collaboratory Living Learning Community, a partnership between the Office of Leadership & Community Engagement and University Housing. Georgia Southern University, a public Carnegie Doctoral/Research institution founded in 1906, offers 141 degree programs serving more than 27,000 students through nine colleges on three campuses in Statesboro, Savannah, Hinesville and online instruction.
