Georgia Southern University offers Zipcar service to students, faculty and staff

Georgia Southern University students, faculty and staff without a vehicle on campus need not panic when it’s time to take a trip. For the price of about four lattes, everyone on the Statesboro campus can have annual access to two cars that are available to be checked out and driven up to 180 miles a day. The University’s Parking and Transportation Services department has partnered with Zipcar Inc., since 2013 to offer accessible car services to faculty, students and staff on the Statesboro Campus. Zipcar is the world’s largest car-sharing service, giving convenient access to vehicles located in cities, airports and campuses all over the world. “Zipcar benefits students who do not have their own vehicles and need to get to locations within the area, such as grocery stores, pharmacies and other retail locations,” said Director of Auxiliary Marketing Michael Murphy. “Any student of Georgia Southern University can use the service and enjoy the added mobility to their college experience. Auxiliary Services is proud to serve our students by providing convenient, safe services like Zipcar.” The University currently has a Nissan Sentra and a Ford Escape available for rent on the Statesboro Campus. Other vehicles will be available throughout the year. This service is not offered on the Armstrong Campus at this time, but plans are in the works to extend the service there in the future. Zipcars are located in Lot C in the Centennial Place Parking Lot. They are available on-demand and can be easily reserved and accessed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The annual membership fee is $15 for students, faculty and staff. Student leaders, such as student government leaders, resident assistants, campus tour guides and orientation staff, can join for free. Zipcars can be used by the hour or by the day depending on how long the customer reserves the vehicle. A gas card, parking card and insurance card are included in the reservation. There will be an additional charge for trips over 180 miles. This service makes car-sharing user-friendly on campus with five easy steps.
  • Join: Sign up for the service online, and a Zipcard will be mailed to the customer within three to seven days.
  • Reserve: Download the app to find and reserve the Zipcar on campus.
  • Unlock: The car will unlock after scanning the Zipcard.
  • Drive: The key will be located inside the car in the glove box. The car can be driven for the time period it is reserved, but additional time can be added through the mobile app.
  • Return: Take the car back to its designated location. The vehicle can be locked through the mobile app or by scanning the Zipcard. The key should be left in its proper spot in the car.
