Faculty, staff kick off new academic year during annual convocation ceremony

[pb_slideshow group="3"] Georgia Southern is at a pivotal moment in its history. That’s the message Interim President Shelley C. Nickel had for faculty and staff at Georgia Southern University during the annual Fall Convocation. “This is an exciting time in Georgia Southern’s history,” she said. “We are in a pivotal moment at the University, where our plans and implementation will determine who and what we become. I believe the timing is perfect for us to make a remarkable impact on this region.” Nickel led the crowd through a brief history of Georgia Southern and the former Armstrong State universities and what a consolidation might have looked like 50 years ago. She went on to tout the accomplishments of both universities and how those accomplishments helped shape the new Georgia Southern. “We are now the largest University south of Atlanta, with 141 degree programs serving 27,000 students across three campuses,” she said. “I know how tough consolidation can be. It takes a real commitment to cooperation and perseverance. However, not many people get to work on building a new University — taking the best characteristics from two institutions to make one. You are doing that.” Nickel and University leaders also recognized the Faculty Award recipients on the Armstrong Campus and the Focus on Excellence Award recipients on the Statesboro Campus.
