Sport management students at Georgia Southern University had the opportunity to get hands-on operations experience when they volunteered at a PGA TOUR Playoff event in Atlanta.
The students volunteered at the TOUR Championship at East Lake Golf Club Sept. 20-23, as members of the student organization, Athletic Professionals Group. The TOUR Championship is an event of the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup.
Students received hands-on experience assisting the admissions chairman with event management that included working the gates, security, crowd control, patron assistance and customer service.
“As a volunteer, we were expected to demonstrate great guest service,” stated Joshua Bailey, junior from Marietta, Georgia. “The hard work that my peers and I demonstrated during the event definitely opened a door for students to be able to work future tournaments.”
Otto Echemendia, a junior from Sandy Springs, Georgia, enjoyed learning how the tournament was run from an operations point of view.
“We got to see how a large-scale [PGA event] was managed and coordinated to ensure fans had a great time,” added Cameron Speakes, a senior from Atlanta.
Participants noted some of their favorite parts of the event as meeting professional golfer, Dustin Johnson, witnessing Tiger Woods win his first event in five years and being able to share photos and stories of the event with family and friends.
The Athletic Professionals Group is open to any Georgia Southern University student who has an interest in the sport management field. The group’s purpose is to learn about sport management, develop managerial and leadership skills through involvement in community and peer interactions, and establish communication networks with sport industry professions.
