Georgia Southern student affairs staff member given award by Georgia College Personnel Association

John Banter, the associate director in the Office of Leadership and Community Engagement, was recently presented with the Paul K. Jahr Award of Excellence by the Georgia College Personnel Association (GCPA). Banter said he had no idea he was getting recognized. “Anytime you are recognized for the work you do it feels great,” Banter said. “The work we do in student affairs often goes unnoticed, but we all seek to enhance student success through intentionally designed learning environments that promote student engagement.” [caption id="attachment_9015" align="alignleft" width="200"] John Banter[/caption] The Award of Excellence is named in honor of Jahr, Ed.D., for his outstanding contributions to the state and to the profession. This award is presented to a professional who has dedicated themselves to professional student affairs service through teaching, counseling, administration, research, publication, and involvement in state, regional and national activities. Banter was nominated by his supervisor, Director of the Office of Leadership and Community Engagement, Jodi Kennedy. “With the criteria in mind, my supervisor nominated me for the work I have done in developing the Southern Leaders Program, which is Georgia Southern's student leadership program, for my teaching of undergraduate leadership courses, for the research I have conducted to advance the field of leadership education, and for roles I have with statewide and national leadership organizations,” Banter said. Banter is a doctoral candidate with Georgia Southern's College of Education working on his Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership. His research focuses on leadership behavior development of college students engaged in leadership development programs.
