School of Nursing, OTC collaborate to better understand life with disabilities

Thanks to a collaborative effort between Georgia Southern University’s School of Nursing and Ogeechee Technical College (OTC), students, staff and faculty at OTC have a better understanding of people with disabilities after participating in a simulated experience.
Georgia Southern faculty members Debra Hagerty, DNP, and Peggy Mossholder, Ph.D., from the School of Nursing teamed up with Sabrina Burns, the accessibility and special populations coordinator at OTC, to offer eight disability simulation centers in recognition of OTC's National Disability Employment Awareness Month.
Hagerty and Mossholder brought the disability simulation centers to OTC to provide attendees with a first-hand experience of the obstacles an individual with disabilities may face daily. Each center was managed by student and staff volunteers from OTC.
"The event was a huge success and brought awareness of multiple disabilities such as stroke, dysphagia, visual and hearing impairments as well as arthritis and Parkinson's tremor to the students, staff and faculty at Ogeechee Technical College," stated Hagerty.
The equipment and disability stations were supported through a previously received grant Hagerty received in 2020 from the Georgia Health Foundation.
