Students honor legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. through service

Some Georgia Southern students learned about the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. and the greater Statesboro community recently during Eagles in Action: MLK’s Legacy of Service, a weekend to learn, engage and explore in remembrance of the late civil rights activist.
The initiative, which was a partnership between the Office of Leadership and Community Engagement and the Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA), offered students the chance to volunteer with local agencies including the Habitat Restore, Children’s Medical Services and Keep Statesboro Bulloch Beautiful, among others. In total, nine students performed a total of 144 service hours throughout the MLK holiday weekend. In addition to the service, students engaged in critical dialogue about the social issues connected to their community engagement.
“Ultimately, the weekend was more than just about service,” said OMA director Takeshia Brown. “It was an opportunity to make connections with MLK and for our students to learn more about Statesboro and Bulloch County at large, and to learn the value of working together. Our students did more than service because it felt good; they served because they understood their responsibility to the community. We look forward to continuing and expanding this opportunity in the future.”
