Office of Internal Audit, Risk & Compliance recognizes Internal Audit Awareness Month

May is Internal Audit Awareness Month. To celebrate, we’re highlighting information about who we are and what we do for the University.

Internal Audit isn’t here to find out what’s wrong in your department.  Internal Audit wants to work with you to add value to your operations, help you establish effective internal controls that point out where things may go awry, reduce costs, and (maybe most importantly) avoid unnecessary risks.  We are your partners, your colleagues, your trusted advisors in achieving the University’s strategic goals.  We work together to build a solid foundation of policies, processes, and communication to ensure we meet the University’s goal of providing an excellent education to our students.

How can we work together?

Notify us if a control isn’t working.  We can help you figure out why.  We can help you develop new controls that do work in your processes.  We can help identify unnecessary or duplicate controls that can be removed.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help or advice.  If you are having a problem, we may have talked to another department about a similar issue.  Calls for assistance or information don’t automatically become audits.  Sometimes you just need someone to discuss new ideas; someone to help find a policy or regulation; someone to give you guidance on how to implement a change.  Internal Audit, Risk & Compliance is here for you!

Share your ideas for improvement.  If you have found a solution to a problem, please let us know!  We want to help implement University-wide solutions to University-wide issues.  We meet regularly with division and department leaders and can help you gather and/or spread information (always giving you credit for the ideas).

Let us know if you are being audited by someone else.  Various departments are often reviewed or audited by regulators, accreditors, etc.  We can help manage the process by talking with the external auditors, helping you write audit responses, and reminding you when those action items are due.
