Staff Who Soar – Philip Leroy

Philip Leroy, a Georgia Southern University Information Technology Business Analyst, has been working with the University for more than two decades.
Originally born in Towson, Maryland, he and his family moved to Georgia when he was a young child. After growing up around Atlanta and later in Waynesboro, Georgia, he went on to graduate from Georgia Southern with a bachelor’s degree in history.
He began working as a student worker during his years at Georgia Southern as an undergraduate, working as a Resident Advisor for University Housing, and then for Lakeside Café. After graduation, he lived in Hendersonville, North Carolina, for a short period of time before moving back down to Georgia, where he would return to Lakeside Café and then move over to the campus Chick-fil-A in 2003. Now, he helps oversee the Point of Sales Systems implementations and support across Georgia Southern and serves on the PCI Committee to help make sure we are meeting the PCI Compliances, etc.
In 2013, he obtained his Master of Science in Information Technology from Southern Polytechnic State University, now Kennesaw State.
Here are some questions we asked Philip about himself and what makes him a Staff Who Soar:
Q: What does your day to day look like?
A: My day starts with checking on things with our POS systems and making sure everything is up and running and set to go for the day. I’ll check and respond to my emails, and check and respond to any MyHelp Tickets assigned to me. If I do notice any issues ahead of time, I will reach out to the users or head over to the location to check on things and make sure everything is back up and functioning as it should.
Q: What is your favorite part about working at Georgia Southern? What does it take to reach that 21-year mark?
A: I love being able to interact with my customers when I can and do my best to be there for any help that is needed. I enjoy working with my colleagues, and also learning new things and possibilities with some of the POS Systems that we have across campus. I love the sense of family and belonging as I chat and talk with my customers and my colleagues on a daily or weekly basis. In the long run, just being here for people and being able to help where and when needed has always been a passion of mine besides learning about new things. I love my job and the people that I work with.
Q: Let's talk a little bit about you as a person. Do you have any hobbies? How do you like to unwind?
A: My hobbies in the past have been playing video games, such as World of Warcraft, Star Trek Online, Star Wars, and several of the old-style Blizzard Games like Warcraft, Diablo, and StarCraft. Though I do not play that often anymore due to spending quality time with my wife, I still enjoy hopping on once in a while and playing. Some of the other activities that I enjoy doing are some lite readings or listening to audio books. I am an avid figurine collector ranging from Transformers, GI Joe, Masters of the Universe, Star Wars, and Star Trek. Finally, I enjoy the outdoors and nature, especially the Mountains and the Ocean and enjoy taking walks or hiking on the trails.
