Campus Recreation & Intramurals executive director recognized with national award

Campus Recreation & Intramurals (CRI) at Georgia Southern University can add another trophy to its collection. This year, a key leader in CRI was recognized by the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA).

Gene Sherry, executive director of CRI, was recently awarded with the 2024 NIRSA Region Award of Merit, which celebrates outstanding professionals from each NIRSA Region who exhibit exceptional performance or dedication to NIRSA and the collegiate recreation field.

Gene Sherry, executive director of CRI, was recently awarded with the 2024 NIRSA Region Award of Merit, which celebrates outstanding professionals from each NIRSA Region who exhibit exceptional performance or dedication to NIRSA and the collegiate recreation field.

“The recognition as the recipient of our NIRSA Region 2 Award of Merit is extremely special to me, as it comes from colleagues and an organization that have played an integral role in my professional life,” said Sherry. “The opportunities to serve presented me with rewarding experiences, growth in my own leadership skills and lifetime friendships. The previous recipients set a high standard of excellence in our profession and I am humbled to be associated with them.”

Sherry said his philosophy is built on a foundation of what he described as “you get out of something what you put into it.”

According to NIRSA, ideal award winners make significant contributions to the establishment, development or operation, show innovative leadership and exemplify creativity and dedication to their work and institution.

“Commiting to the mission and purpose of our work and investing in people on the journey have proven to be a hallmark of our success at Campus Recreation and Intramurals,” he added. “ Not only have we had amazing students and staff, our University leadership has been all-in with their commitment to extracurricular opportunities.”
