Georgia Southern senior places third in International ASME Competition

Cole Hayne, a senior mechanical engineering major in Georgia Southern University’s Allen E. Paulson College of Engineering and Computing, earned third place in the prestigious International American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) POWER2024 Student Paper Competition held in September. As an undergraduate competing against students at higher academic levels including six Ph.D. candidates, Hayne's performance stood out in the global event.
"I was personally impressed by his presentation performance and the way he handled questions from the judges and audience, considering he was the most junior student at the competition," said Sevki Cesmeci, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Hayne’s research advisor. "He did an incredible job representing Georgia Southern University on an international stage."
Hayne’s paper, co-authored with his lab mates, focused on supercritical carbon dioxide power cycles, a next-generation power generation technology. Cesmeci served as the principal investigator of the project, which was funded by a $1.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy.
In recognition of his achievement, Hayne received a certificate of recognition and a $750 monetary award.
