Georgia Southern University’s Office of Research and Economic Development has appointed Hui Jin, Ph.D., as a faculty fellow for research. An associate professor in the Department of Middle Grades and Secondary Education within the College of Education, Jin brings extensive research experience and academic leadership to this new role.

With a distinguished career spanning more than two decades, Jin is nationally recognized for her expertise in science education, particularly in learning progressions, data reasoning and the integration of artificial intelligence in assessment.

She has secured more than $3 million in external research funding, including major grants from the National Science Foundation and the Institute of Education Sciences. Her work has been widely published in leading academic journals, and her recent edited volume, Handbook of Research on Science Learning Progressions, reached No. 3 in Amazon’s Science and Technology Teaching Materials category in 2024.

Jin is especially excited about using emerging technologies to strengthen the University’s research enterprise.

“I look forward to developing initiatives and resources that build research capacity and help faculty harness cutting-edge tools — especially AI — to streamline publication workflows, enhance proposal competitiveness and foster cross-disciplinary collaboration,” she said.

Brent Feske, Ph.D., associate vice president for research, expressed enthusiasm about the appointment.

“The research landscape is ever evolving as technologies change and improve — perhaps now more than ever,” said Feske. “I know Dr. Jin’s leadership and expertise will be invaluable as we grow and adapt to new challenges.”

The Faculty Fellow program within the Office of Research and Economic Development is designed to leverage faculty expertise and provide comprehensive support for researchers. Fellows serve as liaisons between the research office and academic units, facilitate internal funding opportunities and contribute to research-related training and mentoring. In this role, Jin will help advance Georgia Southern’s research infrastructure and foster a culture of innovation and scholarly excellence.
