Georgia Southern University Liberty Campus hosts Career-Readiness speaker series

This fall, Georgia Southern University Liberty Campus launched “Real Talk, Real Careers,” a new career-readiness series geared to introduce students to University alumni in various fields.
“‘Real Talk, Real Careers' affords students a unique opportunity to engage with professionals who not only have earned degrees from our University, but who have used the education they received from Georgia Southern as a springboard for outstanding careers,” said Chanté Baker-Martin, Ph.D., Liberty Campus director.
Featured speakers for September and October included:
Nick Westbrook — Owner/Operator, Chick-fil-A Hinesville
Gwendolyn “Dr. Gwen” Martin, Ed.D., — CEO, Counselor Café, LLC, and Coastal Crossroads Counseling Solutions, LLC
Deborah Marie Rodriguez Garcia — Senior program manager and learning strategist

“The candor each speaker infused into their stories gave students first-hand accounts of the obstacles and opportunities one may experience over the course of a career. They freely shared lessons learned, and the speakers reminded students that their career journeys will evolve over time.”
Liberty Campus student Vestal Melville-Robinson agrees.

“‘Real Talk, Real Careers’ is very good,” Melville-Robinson said. “Students can realize that some people in their professions do not have a linear career progression. When opportunities come that [students] have to pivot and find themselves on a different career path, they shouldn’t be intimidated. Just embrace change as it comes.”
In alignment with the University’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), “Ready Day 1 Connect,” guest speakers shared insights from their professional journeys and imparted words of wisdom to students primarily enrolled in FYE 1220, but series talks are open to all students to attend.
The series will continue in the spring.
