FMAD, Athletics team up to repair football tunnel

Hope Wallace-Simpara makes repairs to the tunnel used by the Georgia Southern football team

When Georgia Southern Athletics needed repairs made to the tunnel the football team runs through to enter Glenn Bryant Field in Allen E. Paulson Stadium on game days, the athletics marketing team turned to the School of Human Ecology’s Fashion Merchandising and Apparel Design (FMAD) program.

School Chair Beth Myers, Ph.D., and Assistant Professor Hope Wallace-Simpara, worked with Dan Adams, assistant athletics director for promotions and fan experience, to evaluate the repairs.

“One of the doors to our inflatable tunnel was practically falling off,” Adams said. “I reached out to Beth, and she put me in touch with Hope Wallace-Simpara. Hope came and looked at the tunnel and said ‘easy fix,’” said Dan Adams.

The tunnel was taken to Simpara’s workshop in the Interdisciplinary Academic Building where she worked with senior fashion major Diego Ojeda to complete the repairs in about an hour.

“Since it was minor, we decided that we could take care of it on campus instead of them outsourcing the repair,” Simpara said.

These in-house repairs are just one way we all share a part in keeping Our House moving forward.

"Georgia Southern is definitely a community and I think that’s what makes us unique from other institutions," Simpara said. "We have so many resources on campus and everyone is willing to pitch in for the greater good.  The students were really excited about the opportunity to assist.  Even though this was a small repair, I’m grateful for the opportunity for them to see the full scope of their skillset and it’s practical applications."
