Fall 2021 classes to begin midweek to enhance student transition, success

In the fall, Georgia Southern University students will begin classes on Wednesday, Aug. 11. The midweek kickoff will allow for several days of enhanced student programming and opportunities to welcome new and returning students to their respective campuses.

Operation Move-In, the University’s collaborative effort during which faculty, staff, student and community volunteers help students move into residence halls, will take place on Friday, Aug. 6 and Saturday, Aug. 7, followed by several days of programming dedicated to helping students seamlessly acclimate to the college environment.

“A Wednesday start is a game-changer in terms of new student readiness for the fall term,” said Scot Lingrell, Ph.D., vice president for Enrollment Management at Georgia Southern. “Having two working days prior to the start of classes instead of a weekend is just good practice, and it allows students to get better prepared and settled for that first day. Having the ability to do full transition programming with new students while the University is fully open and operating will be a very important part of our student success strategy."

A number of events including picnics, faculty and staff meet-and-greets, Convocation, academic department open houses and volunteer opportunities are being planned to help set students up for success.

Throughout the experience, students and family members will have the opportunity to learn about Georgia Southern’s traditions, create connections with peers, faculty and staff, and be well-informed of enrollment milestones and resources to attain successful support as a new student.

Volunteer opportunities will be available for faculty, staff and students during the events, and they are encouraged to help new and returning students feel welcomed and ready to be part of Eagle Nation.
