Georgia Southern employee honored following 45 years of service
When Patricia McCubbins began her time at Georgia Southern University, former Georgia Gov. Jimmy Carter was in the White House, Johnny Carson was dominating late night television and gasoline was under 60 cents a gallon.
McCubbins fancies herself a good cook, which seems fitting, because her experiences with the institution involve working with Dining Services.

Her first position with Georgia Southern was in 1976. Since then, she has moved around within the culinary side of the University’s operations. But one thing has remained constant: she has always been in a Georgia Southern kitchen. Today, she serves as a production chef for the Chick-fil-A on the Statesboro Campus.
McCubbins was recognized for her longevity at Georgia Southern during the 2022 University Awards of Excellence and Years of Service Recognition ceremony on the Armstrong Campus in Savannah. When her name was called to the stage, her peers in the audience immediately broke out into a roar of applause and gave her a standing ovation that lasted 40 seconds, the longest stretch of applause for anyone during the ceremony.
McCubbins said she’s met a lot of good people and enjoyed the years of her Georgia Southern career. She added she wasn’t expecting to be recognized for her achievement.
“I was surprised,” she said. “I don't really know how long I've been here, but somebody told me how long it has been. I wasn't keeping up with how many years I've been here.”
With her recognition, McCubbins was given a trophy along with a bouquet of flowers from President Kyle Marrero. She also received praise from her leadership team.
“Patricia's great attitude while displaying an unparalleled consistent commitment to Eagle Dining Services and Georgia Southern University is what never ceases to amaze us,” said Dining Services leadership in a statement read during the ceremony. “Her faithful and dedicated commitment and years of service is a shining example for the meaning of loyalty for our fellow employees.”
McCubbins isn’t the only employee celebrating a milestone at Georgia Southern University. Robert Harris, Gretsch School of Music professor, celebrated 40 years with school.
