Alumna, graduate student earn scholarships from Georgia Foundation of Physical Therapy

Barney Poole with the Georgia Foundation for Physical Therapy congratulates Physical Therapy scholarship recipients Miriam Gritis and Corey Smith.

Miriam Gritis, a recent graduate of Georgia Southern University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy Program, and Corey Smith, a current student in the program, were each awarded a scholarship of $2,000 from the Georgia Foundation of Physical Therapy (GFPT).

Gritis, who completed her degree in May, plans to use the scholarship to fund her membership to the American Physical Therapy Association, and to assist with costs related to becoming a licensed physical therapist.

“The financial cost of becoming a physical therapist can be challenging for students and new graduates,” said Gritis. “I am so grateful that the GFPT has removed that barrier to my professional development.”

Smith, who will graduate in May 2023, plans to use the scholarship to complete his Doctor of Physical Therapy program.

To be eligible for a scholarship, recipients had to submit transcripts and a two-page essay on leadership and educational experiences in the physical therapy profession.

Housed in the Waters College of Health Professions, the Doctor of Physical Therapy program is a full-time doctoral program offered on the Armstrong Campus in Savannah, Georgia. The program consists of nine semesters of academic coursework, including three full-time clinical affiliations and several additional clinical experiences.
