Georgia Southern Officials Visit U.S. Army’s Aberdeen Proving Grounds
Georgia Southern President Brooks Keel and Vice President for Research Charles Patterson recently visited the U.S. Army’s Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland to discuss research and internship opportunities for Georgia Southern University.
The two visited with Brig. Gen. Leslie C. Smith, commander of the 20th Support Command. Gen. Smith is a 1985 alumnus of Georgia Southern with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in accounting/public accounting.
The 20th Support Command, located at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, provides an operational headquarters for U.S. Army Forces Command’s active component chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and high-yield explosives capabilities and provides a worldwide deployable headquarters to manage weapons of mass destruction elimination operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.
While at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Georgia Southern representatives also visited with leaders and staff of the Edgewood Chemical and Biological Center, Advanced Chemistry Laboratory, and the Research, Development and Engineering Command, and toured the facilities’ laboratories.
The opportunity for research partnerships and internship opportunities with the Army’s research facilities come at an opportune time, as the Army is in the process of relocating numerous research and development groups to the facility as part of the its Base Realignment and Closure plan.
