Georgia Southern University Holds 2011 Fall Convocation
Georgia Southern University President Brooks Keel, Ph.D., welcomed faculty and staff during the 2011 Fall Convocation as the University makes final preparations for the upcoming fall semester. The ceremony, which is held each fall at the Performing Arts Center, was attended by more than 800 faculty and staff members.
The theme for the annual convocation was Investing in a Vision of Excellence. In his “State of the University” remarks, Keel stated, “This is an exciting time in our University’s history and we are making an investment of time, passion, energy and thoughts to continue to serve our students who are at the core of everything we do.” He encouraged all faculty and staff to “invest in the lives of our more than 20,000 students.”
During the ceremony, Keel, along with Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Ted Moore, Ph.D., presented the 2011-2012 Faculty Awards for Excellence. Established in 1985, the awards recognize excellence in service, contributions to instruction and research/creative scholarly activity. Since the awards began 26 years ago, only 156 have been presented. In 1988, Georgia Southern Professor Emeritus, Sculpture Pat Steadman was commissioned to create a special medallion that is presented to each award winner.
