Alumna Appointed to Leadership at Virginia Commonwealth University

Wanda S. Mitchell, Ed.D., an alumna of Georgia Southern University, has been appointed founding vice president for diversity and equity of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and will begin her new position on Sept. 1.

Mitchell’s unit will focus on strengthening VCU’s climate of equity, diversity and inclusiveness and is responsible for implementing the University’s five-year diversity plan. She currently serves as the chief diversity officer and vice provost for faculty development and inclusive excellence at the University of New Hampshire. 

Mitchell’s expertise has been recognized through her work with many prestigious organizations, including the National Association of Diversity Officers in Higher Education. She is a sought-after speaker and regularly presents on topics of recruitment and retention, diversity and educational equity and women’s leadership development.

She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Georgia Southern and a master’s degree in counseling from Hampton University. In addition, she received her educational specialist and doctorate of education degrees in counseling from the College of William and Mary.
