Biology Department Leads Seasonal Sock Drive
When you visit the Biological Sciences and Biology buildings this December, you may want to take a second look at the Christmas trees decorated in the lobby. New pairs of socks take the place of traditional ornaments in honor of the Socks for Courtney Foundation, a project created to bring awareness to pediatric heart disease, as well as charities and civic organizations that provide services for young people. You can donate to the cause throughout the month.
The Foundation was founded in memory of 12-year-old Courtney Kemp, the daughter of Alneata Kemp, administrative secretary in the Department of Biology.
“We wanted to create a way for our department to give back this season, and this was a great way! We’re hoping to collect 300 pairs of socks,” said Janee Cardell, administrative specialist and coordinator in the Department of Biology.
Collection bins have been placed in the new Biological Sciences building (258) as well as the Biology building (202) located adjacent to the Math/Physics building. Reference the campus map for directions.
New men’s, women’s and children’s socks may be donated in any color or size. Donations will supply area hospitals, shelters, churches and burn centers while supporting the work of the following organizations:
- The American Heart Association
- Ga. Sherriff’s Youth Home-Swainsboro, GA
- Memorial Children’s Hospital-Savannah, GA
- Shoes/Socks for Orphan Soul
- Haiti Relief Project
In addition, the Department of Biology will utilize its end-of-semester social as a kickoff for collections this Friday from 6-8 p.m. in the Biological Sciences building. Limited to Biology faculty and staff members, the employees are being asked to bring donations to the event.
