Royal Wins Miss Georgia Southern University

Junior Melissa Royal is Miss Georgia Southern University 2014. A Spanish and international trade major from Acworth, Ga., Royal was one of 10 contestants to compete for the title during the scholarship pageant. She is the president of the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society and a Southern Leader. “It feels amazing to be Miss Georgia Southern! Participating and winning Miss Georgia Southern has been an aspiration of mine since my freshman year, so I am extremely proud that I could make my dream a reality. I love my Georgia Southern and cannot wait to represent this amazing university in the Statesboro community as well as at the Miss Georgia competition in June,” Royal said. Her platform, “Connecting the Global Community through Microlending,” focuses on helping to end global poverty.  “My study abroad experience in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and my Introduction to International Studies class with Dr. Van Tassell is what got me interested heavily in global issues. Those two things really opened my eyes to the issues of the world and inspired me to search for ways that I could help,” she said. As Miss Georgia Southern University, Royal will represent the University in the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Savannah, Ga., and during Georgia Southern’s freshman orientation, open house and recruitment events, Homecoming and select community events by invitation. Winning the title of Miss Georgia Southern University earned Royal  a $1,500 scholarship, a $500 travel stipend, three free months at Omni Fight Club of Statesboro, a full spa day at Serenity Day Spa , a complimentary photo shoot from Lori Grice Photography, a special events wardrobe from Frills and a Miss Georgia professional consultation and interview preparation. Senior public relations major Amanda Lawler from Toombs, Ga., was first runner- up, while sophomore multimedia communications major and public relations minor Miki Argiriou from Brunskwick, Ga., was named second runner- up. Other winners included Caroline Eaker for best Evening Gown, Jamesa Hogges for Miss Congeniality and Miss Photogenic and Corine Richard for People’s Choice.
