DUI Simulator Event Promotes Alcohol Awareness

Alcohol Awareness Month isn’t until April, but the Office of Alcohol and Other Drugs Programs at Georgia Southern is getting a head start on the campaign to encourage drinking responsibly.

Office of Alcohol and Other Drugs Programs – Driving Under the Influence Simulation
Thursday, March 6 | 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. | Outside Russell Union

The Office of Alcohol and Other Drugs Programs will host a DUI simulation located outside of Russell Union to help highlight the negative impacts of alcohol in the Statesboro community. The event is part of a national campaign by the Arrive Alive Tour. "This is a hands-on simulation, not just a group of students listening to a lecture," said Nicole Withers, administrative coordinator for the Office of Alcohol and Other Drugs Programs. During the video game-like simulation, students will sit in a car and wear glasses that will enable them to experience what it feels like to drive drunk. After the simulation, a ticket shows participants the consequences of getting behind the wheel after drinking. "DUIs can cost between $8,000 to $10,000 once you figure in the court fees and mandated classes," Withers said. Students also will receive a free incentive for participating courtesy of Health Services. For more information, contact Withers by emailing nwithers@georgiasouthern.edu.
