Georgia Southern University to Host Dementia and Alzheimer’s Conference
Georgia Southern University’s Division of Continuing Education will host “Understanding Dementia and Alzheimer’s,” a conference to provide attendees with positive approaches and information for loved ones battling Alzheimer’s and dementia. The one-day conference will explain the differences between dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and forgetfulness; describe symptoms that commonly occur with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia-related damage; and explain how to recognize behaviors that are indicative of dementia-related conditions. The conference will be held Monday, April 21, at the Nessmith-Lane Conference Center, registration for the session is $99 and $125 after April 14. Registration includes a light continental breakfast, lunch, sessions and professional credits for the Georgia Nurses Association, Licensed Professional Counselors and the National Association of Social Workers-Georgia. Exhibitor and sponsorship opportunities are available. The number of Georgians 65 and older, diagnosed with Alzheimer’s is expected to rise to 140,000 within the next ten years. Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease and there is no way to prevent it, cure it or even slow its progress. The disease not only impacts family members, but friends, caregivers and healthcare professionals. In 2012, the total value of unpaid care totaled $6,944,000.
