Georgia Southern University Arabic Club Named Multicultural Organization of the Year

Georgia Southern University’s Arabic Club has been named the 2014 Multicultural Organization of the Year in recognition of its admired reputation among other student organizations, commitment to diversity, programming and students. “I am very proud of my students, that in a short period of time, we have been able to impact our campus and community in this way,” said Youssef Salhi, advisor of the Arabic Club and lecturer of Arabic in the Department of Foreign Languages. “The Arabic Club is only two years old.” Throughout the year, the Arabic Club organized many activities to promote cultural awareness and a commitment to diversity on campus including international poetry night, coffee hour, movie night, cooking workshops and Soccer Sunday. A belly dancing workshop provided the opportunity to learn the art of Middle Eastern dance. Music night also was held during which an Arabic band performed live at Georgia Southern. Both events garnered 200 attendees. In addition, the Arabic Club received a $2,500 Campus Life Enrichment Committee (CLEC) grant and used the funds to bring the world-renowned peace activist, Dr. Mohja Kahf to campus to speak about the Syrian Peace Movement. The Arabic Club’s commitment to cultural diversity goes beyond the campus. Within the Statesboro community, Arabic Club members gave speeches and presentations in local schools and churches, and organized student visits to the Bulloch County Islamic Center. Club members also collaborated with other student organizations such as the International Club, Spanish Club, French Club and Chinese Club. The award was presented by the Multicultural Student Center during the 2014 Eagles in Diversity Awards Banquet on Friday, May 2 in the Williams Center Multipurpose Room.
