The 2014 Eagle Leadership Graduation was held on Friday, Nov. 21.[/caption]
The Eagle Leadership Program, an 11-month leadership course designed for faculty and staff and led by Human Resources, honored 23 new scholars at the capstone graduation recently.
Focused on developing leaders, creating an environment to promote University relations and collaboration among University leaders, the program began in 2009. Candidates are nominated by Georgia Southern’s divisional vice presidents for their dedication, leadership skills and potential professional growth.
"I learned a great deal about the different areas around campus," said Samantha Nesmith ('07), assistant director of Donor Relations. "It was very informative listening to faculty from the different colleges, as well as staff from areas such as Public Safety, Student Affairs, Graduate Studies, Information Technology Services and Facility Services. We all have the same goal of helping the students, but how we fulfill that goal is vastly different for each area."
Throughout the course, participants learned about the following topics and events:
- Employment Law
- High Impact Leadership
- Improving Communication Skills
- Practical Problem Solving and Decision Making
- Developing People: Coaching, Counseling and Training
- Handling Conflict and Criticism and/or Building Trust and Team building
- Personality and Leadership Traits
- Dealing with Difficult Personalities
- President’s Cabinet roundtable discussion
"I would encourage other employees to participate because it really gives you a greater understanding of what happens here at Georgia Southern University. As a group, you talk about the issues that the University is facing and you hear discussions from a wide variety of professionals," said Nesmith. "You get to hear different perspectives that you may not have considered before. You walk out of there knowing that you have learned skills that will help you as you move through your career dealing with a variety of people and different perspectives."
Congratulations to the following 2014 Eagle Leadership Scholars:
