Georgia Southern Multimedia Team Produces ESPN3 Gameday Broadcast

Video directors at their screens When the Eagles baseball team takes the field against the University of Georgia this weekend, Georgia Southern’s Multimedia Development Center (MDC) will be running the video production. ESPN3, ESPN’s online streaming service, asked the University to produce the games, airing live online Friday, Feb. 27 at 6 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 28 at 2 p.m. and Sunday, March 1 at 1 p.m. The MDC staff will handle all video production work, including camera, audio, direction, replays and engineering, the majority of which will be performed by Georgia Southern students. This is the second time ESPN3 has relied on the MDC for production. The team helmed its first ESPN3 baseball game when the Eagles faced Georgia Tech on Feb. 17. Though the ESPN staff worked with the team, all of the production work fell on the MDC. “The MDC is student-focused and a majority of our video staff are students from diverse fields across the University,” said Art Berger, director of the MDC. “This streaming event provided a great opportunity for our students to learn and function alongside professional ESPN video staff.” Allen Lincoln, a senior Information Technology major with an emphasis in networking, joined the MDC three years ago. In that short time, he says he has learned more than he could’ve imagined about what it takes to produce a broadcast. “Working with the MDC staff and with Art has been more than a job,” he said. “It’s been a professional learning experience. Every student that works in the MDC knowns they will be given a lot of different video opportunities, from holding the boom microphone, to running a camera, to editing footage and directing.” The MDC is an Emmy award-winning television and multimedia production department of Information Technology Services (ITS). The broadcast will lean heavily on ITS infrastructure, especially ITS Networking and Telecommunications (NetTel), which is essential to providing the bandwidth to stream the games. Be sure to check out the games this weekend. Go Eagles!
