Camp Lawton Public Day

Faculty and students from the Department of Sociology and Anthropology will host a Public Day at Camp Lawton on April 21 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Magnolia Springs State Park, in Millen, Georgia. The day provides the opportunity to explore the archaeology and history of Camp Lawton, the largest prisoner of war camp from the Civil War. See some of the artifacts from the ongoing Spring field school project, explore excavations with student guides and hear from the descendants of confederate guards and Union prisoners about their personal connections to Camp Lawton, and what the history and heritage of the site has meant to them Archaeological investigations relaunched in 2017 at Camp Lawton, which has become a time capsule, locking into the soil the stories and experiences of those who were guarded, and those who guarded them in the lonely Georgia pines as war raged ever closer.
