Students have access to free consultations at Georgia Southern
November 17, 2017
Students at Georgia Southern now have access to free one-on-one consultations to make better health choices through Health Services’ new program Just for the Health of It.
Just for the Health of it is a healthy lifestyle consultation program that provides students with the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain a proper diet and physical activity based on his or her personal health needs.
One of the program objectives is aimed to help increase the likelihood of participants being physically active and eating a well-balanced diet, as well as increasing self-efficacy relating to fitness and nutrition.
“During these sessions, students will have the opportunity to create personalized health goals as well as develop wellness strategies towards reaching those goals,” said Gemma Skuraton, health promotion coordinator of the Health Services Department.
The new, ongoing service includes topics on meal prep, tips to make healthy food choices, strategies to jumpstart or edit a fitness routine, sleep and stress management techniques, weight balance (gaining, losing or maintaining body weight) and more.
Students are required to complete a seven-day physical activity log, a three-day nutrition log and a Campus Recreation & Intramurals Fitness Assessment at the Recreation Activity Center (RAC) prior to scheduling their Healthy Lifestyle Consultation. To schedule a Healthy Lifestyle Consultation appointment with Health Services, the student should email their physical activity logs and nutrition logs to healthpromotion@georgiasouthern.edu. Students who have paid the health fee for the term in which they are enrolled may schedule an appointment after completion of these eligibility requirements.
The consultations will be conducted by the health promotion coordinator and a dietetic intern. Referrals can be made by a healthcare provider in the Georgia Southern Health Services Clinic. Referrals are not required.
The Health Promotion and Education Department is located on the second floor of the Health Services Building.
