Helping Hands pairs with Dining Services to “Go Green”

The Helping Hands organization is comprised of a group of students from Georgia Southern University professor, Dr. Pittaway’s, Applied Small Business Management class. The organization is aimed at raising $5,000 for the Heart and Hands Clinic, located in Statesboro, Ga. The clinic works to provide free health care to those in need.

Georgia Southern University Dining Services is playing a part in helping the organization raise money.  Dining Services has started a new program for the students on campus by selling 24 oz. Tervis tumblers with a top.  Students can use the cup when eating on campus with their dining plan or just to get a refill for one dollar.  The price of the cup varies for students. Students with dining plans can purchase the tumbler for $11 and those without can purchase them for $15. All profits from the sales go toward donations to the Hearts and Hands Clinic.

The Hearts and Hands Clinic promotes healthy living and health education by providing free primary health services for the citizens of the Bulloch County community. Citizens who are medically uninsured and have an income at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty guideline are welcomed at the clinic. The services offered at the clinic include medical care, dental screenings, vision/optical services, referrals to specialists, and assistance in obtaining prescription drugs. The eligibility requirements to receive services from the clinic are as follows: all applicants must be 18 years of age or older, all applicants must be uninsured for the services they are requesting.

Currently, the Helping Hands organization has sold over 150 cups and raised around $2,500 in fundraising efforts. Increasing marketing efforts for the cup has made a significant impact on their daily sales. The Helping Hands organization is continuing fundraising efforts daily in hopes to reach the goal for the clinic.
