SIFE Campbell’s Soup Let’s Can Hunger

On Wednesday April 27th thirteen individuals from the Applied Small Business Management class at Georgia Southern University busted tables, washed dishes, and waited on customers at the new Pizza Mill on Northside Drive in Statesboro. The owner of the new pizza joint collaborated with the CEO of the group, Amber Finley, to allow the team members to do four hours of work for free in exchange for ten percent of that night’s profits and any tips accumulated. In one night they were able to raise approximately $110 for the cause.

The group is rounding out their attempt to reach the goal of 5,000 lbs of food for the Statesboro Food Bank. Many of their efforts include going door to door at local apartment complexes, hosting cookouts, and working for free at local restaurants.  They are currently raised over 3,000 lbs for the food bank but have a large sum of money set aside to purchase food before the semester is over.

Many of the students have a concentration in entrepreneurship and small business management, which is quickly becoming a popular major at the university. The purpose of this course is to create an applied study in creating “something from nothing” which is what entrepreneurship is all about. The group has held numerous events over the past semester; some have accumulated over four hundred dollars at a time and some that only raised about 30 lbs of food. This is such an important concept for students to become comfortable with, especially in the world of failing businesses. It is imperative for students to be able to fail, change their plan, not become discouraged, and find a new way in which to succeed. This course also teaches students, in literal terms, how to differentiate oneself in a marketplace that is flooded with copycats and identical marketing techniques.

Overall this had been a frustrating, nail biting, challenging, and rewarding experience for the thirteen young business people involved in this project. The most beautiful aspect of this course is that not only does each student gain experience and knowhow from this, but they also have the opportunity to raise awareness in the community in which they live and learn.
