Education Focus Area
The Education Focus Area is a great place for students who are interested in making a difference in the lives of others through teaching. Students can then choose to focus on pre-k learning, elementary grades, middle grades, high school, special education, health and physical education, or arts education. Students gain hands-on experience in a variety of public school settings, helping them to develop excellent practical teaching skills.
Students not ready to declare a specific major can choose to be in Exploratory Education until they have decided on a specific Education major. Click the button below to view the Exploratory Education Program Map.

There are two ways to view degree requirements for our majors:

Students can discuss major exploration with their academic advisor, and our Office of Career & Professional Development also has many resources to assist students with Major and Career Exploration.
Majors
Elementary Education, BSEd
This major is designed for students who desire to gain knowledge and skills to teach all subjects at the elementary level including kindergarten through fifth grade. The College of Education at Georgia Southern prepares students for a rewarding profession through a variety of coursework and field experience prior to certification.

Health & Physical Education, BSEd
Prepares students in becoming health and physical educators by learning how to plan and implement a developmentally appropriate P- 12 health education curriculum in traditional school settings.

Middle Grade Education, BSEd
Prepares students to teach 4th through 8th grade with specialization areas in Language Arts, Mathematics, Science or Social Studies. Formal curriculum requirements and field experience lead to certification.

Secondary Education, BSEd
Prepares to teach 9th through 12th grade with specialization areas in Biology, Chemistry, English, History, Math, or Physics. Formal curriculum requirements and field experience lead to certification.

Special Education, BSEd
Prepares students to teach special education at any level P-12. Concentration areas include language arts, reading, or mathematics. The College of Education at Georgia Southern prepares students for a rewarding profession through a variety of coursework and field experience prior to certification.

Art – Art Education Concentration, BFA
Explore a variety of art concepts, materials, teaching techniques and history, and equip yourself to be a model educator of art curriculum for any elementary, middle, or secondary school grade level. Majors will complete student teaching and take the GACE Art Education Assessment Exam used to certify art teachers in Georgia.

Music – Music Education Concentration, BM
Music educators share music with elementary, middle and high school students, inspiring them and teaching them the transformative power of music. Students select either a specialization in choral or instrumental music, participate in chorales or ensembles, and get field experience in area schools.
