Humanities Focus Area

Students focusing in the Humanities gain strong intellectual and interpersonal skills that position them for success in numerous fields. They often advance in their careers rapidly because they are trained to think critically, communicate clearly, and solve complex problems—skills employers cite as some of the most important qualities in the people they hire. They are well-prepared for careers in education, communication, human relations, research, legal fields, and writing. Students focusing in the Humanities also gain a strong sense of personal and social responsibility which prepares them to deal with the complexities of today’s workplace and world.

Majors

Communication Studies, BS

This program provides students with an experiential learning environment in which they can develop critical understanding, appreciation, and strategic application of the symbolizing processes which form and mobilize human activity. Students will develop skills in oral communication, interpersonal communication, teamwork, analysis, flexibility and written communication. By enhancing your sense of personal worth and fostering your ability to solve problems, graduates will be ready for the challenges and opportunities of an increasingly international/intercultural marketplace.

English, BA

With a degree in English, you will become an incisive, culturally responsive writer and critical thinker. You’ll learn how to effectively communicate with different audiences by skillfully interpreting language and producing engaging content. With options for specialized concentrations or a broad approach, you can tailor the major to your career goals. The field of English covers a range of disciplines: creative writing, cultural studies, film studies, linguistics, literature, professional & technical writing, and rhetoric & composition.

History, BA

History is often associated with careers in law, public service, teaching, and the academic world, but is valuable in almost any professional setting. Students learn to conduct independent research, to analyze and integrate large amounts of information, and to present ideas in clear and logical writing.

Interdisciplinary Studies, BIS

The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies program at Georgia Southern University provides opportunities for students who are interested in combining a liberal arts background with a measure of specialization. The degree – offered on-campus or online – offers a solid core curriculum program along with the freedom to choose from a variety of concentrations.

Multimedia Film & Production, BS

The Multimedia Film Production program prepares students for the field of electronic communications in a holistic manner. With media convergence in full bloom, the various information and entertainment industries have more in common than ever before. Today’s graduates need to be creative, entrepreneurial, skilled and broadly educated. Georgia Southern provides students with hands-on instruction in script writing, audio and video production, announcing, and more in its state-of-the-art industry facilities.

Multimedia Journalism, BS

Journalists inform the public about current events; local, state, and international issues; and the actions of public officials, corporate executives, special interest groups, and others in power. This program will teach you about a wide range of journalism, including newspapers, magazines, online publications, broadcasting, and more.

Philosophy, BA

Requires students to learn views held by various philosophers and by doing so, excel in understanding principal points from complex material, evaluate the soundness of the arguments involved and, most importantly, justify their own position on any given topic. These skills are extremely valuable to employers from a variety of fields and professions.

Public Relations, BS

This field entails communicating to the public the value, services, products, or mission of an organization or business. Public relations involve soliciting new business, plus special events, media use, public speaking, fundraising, programming, research, and writing/editing.

World Languages & Cultures, BA

Students will gain mastery in their choice of Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Spanish, or Spanish for the Professions (online) languages, along with career-valuable cultural training and sensitivity.
