ACCUPLACER: STEM Hold

STEM Hold

Congratulations on becoming part of the Eagle Nation. The University System of Georgia established a minimum requirement to enroll in College Algebra (MATH 1111). Majors which require College Algebra (MATH 1111) as the minimum math, may be required to enroll in a co-requite learning support class. 

What does this mean? This means students will be enrolled in both MATH 1111 (3-credit hour) and the paired MATH 0999 (2-credit hour course) corequisite course. Students with a STEM Hold can still be registered for classes without taking the ACCUPLACER. The MATH 0999 course will not count in your GPA.

How can I exempt MATH 0999? You can exempt MATH 0999 by taking the ACCUPLACER Next-Generation Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics test prior to your course starting. Once the course has begun, you must meet the final grade requirement at the end of the corresponding semester to be evaluated for exemption.

Be ready for the exam by reviewing the review materials prior to testing. By exempting MATH 0999 you will save the tuition fees or HOPE hours for the 2 credits and potentially allow you to add another required course.

Students who do not meet one of the USG criteria listed below can take the ACCUPLACER Next-Generation Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, & Statistics exam to test out of the co-requisite support class (MATH 0999) for MATH 1111. It is your decision if you want to automatically take and pay for the support class or you can prepare and take the exam.

Effective Spring 2024 the criteria to enroll directly into MATH 1111 criteria will be:

• Transferable Credit for Area A Mathematics course or
• MPI>= 1265 or
• HSPGA>= 3.2 or
• ACT Mathematics>= 20 or
• SAT (new) Math Test> = 510 or
• Accuplacer Next-Generation Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, & Statistics: 266

What do I do if I changed my major to a Non-STEM?

Contact the Academic Success Center Educational Specialist Team to discuss your change of major and removal of the hold. Once it is removed you will not have to take the ACCUPLACER unless you choose to take MATH 1111. Contact your respective campus:

Remember to include your name and Eagle ID and why you want to discuss removing the hold if you are emailing. This will enhance your experience.

• Georgia Southern Student On-Campus or Remote Fee: $10
• Non-Georgia Southern Student Remote Testing: $25

Testing Appointment Options:

1. On-Campus Testing: Schedule By Appointment Only Monday through Friday, based on availability or through Group Appointments (Savannah & Hinesville Only)
2. Remote Virtual Testing through Georgia Southern Testing Office: Scheduled by appointment based on availability (Contact the Testing Office in Statesboro for appointments regardless of campus.)
3. Remote Campus Testing: Testing at another campus testing center
4. Remote Virtual Testing: Testing is offered through Examity or Proctortrack (available 24/7)

All options must still be scheduled through the Georgia Southern Office of Testing Services.

It is recommended examinees schedule their appointment at least two weeks prior to their desired test date and at least one week prior to orientation to allow for retest opportunities. If you are attending SOAR on-campus, you can schedule your exam while you are on-campus. You can also test after SOAR and even during Drop/Add at the beginning of the semester.

Payment by Credit Card or Web Check: 

Payment for the exam can be received through a credit card, debit card, or web check at the Office of Testing Services Marketplace. Click on the Accuplacer Icon and select the correct campus location for testing. Then select the exam option. You must pay prior to testing.  If you have any questions concerning paying online, please contact the office at testing@georgiasouthern.edu (Statesboro Campus) or testingsav@georgiasouthern.edu (Savannah/Liberty Campus).

What does the exam cover? How can I prepare?

Next-Generation Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics (QAS) consist of 20 questions to assess the following knowledge and skills:

The Next-Generation Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics placement test is a computer-adaptive assessment of test-takers’ ability for selected mathematics content. Questions will focus on a range of topics including computing with rational numbers, applying ratios and proportional reasoning, creating linear expressions and equations, graphing and applying linear equations, understanding probability, and set notation, and interpreting graphical displays. In addition, questions may assess a student’s math ability via computational or fluency skills, conceptual understanding, or the capacity to apply mathematics presented in a context. All questions are multiple-choice in format and appear discretely (standalone) across the assessment. The following knowledge and skill categories are assessed:

• Rational numbers
• Ratio and Proportional Relationships
• Exponents
• Algebraic Expressions
• Linear Equations
• Linear Applications and Graphs
• Probability Sets
• Descriptive Statistics
• Geometry Concepts

Retesting

Testers can retest if needed in only the section that is required based on their scores.

July 2022 Updated Accuplacer Retesting Policy

Testers may retest up to three times per semester. The following guidelines apply:

• Testers must wait at least 7 days prior to the second attempt.
• Testers seeking a third attempt must wait 30 days before retesting and completing the required study materials.
