Overview
Academic Success Coaching is available for students who want ongoing support in the pursuit of BIG GOALS! Whether it’s committing to the ongoing improvement of academic skills, aspiring to attend graduate school, or seeking to achieve one’s maximum potential – Academic Success Coaches are here to help students create, stay accountable to, and achieve their goals.
Required Success Coaching
Academic Success Coaches are the university’s designated officials for administering Academic Intervention services and developing Academic Improvement Plans (AIPs). Students on Academic Intervention are required to work with the Academic Success Center. See the Academic Intervention tab for details.
Academic Intervention
A student with a total institutional GPA less than 2.0 is subject to the Georgia Southern University Academic Standing Policy; the student will be placed on Academic Intervention until the total institutional GPA is 2.0 or higher.
Academic Intervention Requirements
- Georgia Southern 1000: Academic Improvement Coaching
- GS 1000: Academic Improvement Coaching is a required course for students on Academic Intervention. It is a zero-credit-hour, non-graded course designed to help students set goals to improve academic outcomes. There are academic skills modules in Folio and opportunities to meet one-on-one with Academic Success Coaches for guidance and on-going support.
- Academic Improvement Plan
- Students on Academic Intervention must complete an Academic Improvement Plan (AIP) under guidance of an Academic Success Coach. The AIP is developed by the student and the coach and may include, but is not limited to, 1:1 progress meetings, assessments, workshops, and tutoring.
- 15 Credit-Hour Limit
- Students on academic intervention are limited to taking no more than 15 credit hours per semester.
If a student appeals academic suspension, failure to complete the AIP may weigh negatively toward the decision made by the Academic Standards Committee.
Academic Standings
An undergraduate student is considered to be in Good Academic Standing if they have an institutional grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher. Students are placed on Academic Intervention if their Institutional GPA is below a 2.0.
A student on Academic Intervention can maintain (not escalate) their Academic Standing (e.g. W1, P1, etc.) if they earn a Term (Semester) GPA of 2.25 or higher for each term their Institutional GPA is below 2.0.
Students on Academic Intervention who do not earn this minimum Term GPA of 2.25 will have their Academic Standings escalated as follows:
- Warning 1 (W1)
- Probation 1 (P1)
- Suspension 1 (E1): sit out for two consecutive fifteen-week semesters
- Warning 2 (W2)
- Probation 2 (P2)
- Suspension 2 (E2): sit out for three years
